"2B1ASK1" - To Be One, Ask One
The phrase "2B1ASK1" has become the standard for promotion of Masonic membership. In practice, the Masonic organization does not promote recruiting of new members. Masons believe it is important that a new member must ask of his own free volition for an application for membership.
If you are of a mind to seek membership, you must first meet the following conditions:
- You have attained the age of eighteen.
- You have lived in your state for (at least) one year. This is required in most states.
- You are of good moral character.
- You are NOT a felon or habitual criminal.
- You believe in the laws of our country.
- You are free from a disqualifying mental illness.
- You believe in a Supreme Being.
- You are willing to assume the Masonic obligation.
Steps to Become a MasonIf you meet the conditions listed above, you would then contact the Secretary of the local lodge you wish to join -- in order to obtain a "Petition." In most places, any member may obtain the petition to give it to you, generally at your request.
After you completely fill out the Petition, you return it with the proper fees to the Lodge Secretary. The Petition is submitted to an Investigation Committee which will arrange to meet with you. They will verify your moral intent and ask you a few simple questions. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet some of the Lodge's members and to ask any questions of your own. The Committee reports back to the leading officer, whose title is "Worshipful Master."
Once the Petition and the Investigating Committee's report is presented in a stated meeting, a vote will be taken in order to elect or deny the Petition. If this vote is favorable, the Secretary will contact you to arrange for your initiation into the Lodge.
